California smog checks are strict, but most failures come down to small stuff you can catch in your driveway before you ever pull into the station.
The five-minute pre-check
- Check-engine light off (a stored code is an automatic fail).
- Drive the car for a week or so before testing so the readiness monitors are 'ready' — not reset after a recent battery disconnect.
- Tires properly inflated for the dyno test.
- No obvious fluid leaks or rough idle.
- Gas cap sealed tight — a loose cap can trip an evap code.
If your check-engine light is on, get it diagnosed before smog day — and the diagnostic fee credits toward the fix.
